[ITSnews] Encore of Recent ITS Annoucements

This issue of ITSnews is mostly an encore of recent International
Thermoelectric Society
announcements. I am repeating these today because of reports of
delivery problems with the previous ZTnewsatzts [dot] com email newsletter
(now defunct).

There is a new Job posting below, however.

Call for Candidates to the 2009 Annual Young Investigator Award

The International Thermoelectric Society (ITS) announces the 2009 ITS
Young Investigator Award for Excellence in Research in Thermoelectrics
by a young investigator who holds a permanent position in either:
academia (tenure track), industry, government lab or scientific
institute (e.g. The Max Planck Institute). This award is to be given
to a young researcher who has exhibited a record of excellent original
work and significant results in the field of thermoelectrics or
thermoelectric materials. The recipient should have shown significant
research in the early stages of his/her career.

The award is sponsored by The International Thermoelectrics Society
(ITS) and carries a cash prize of two thousand dollars ($2000 in US
currency) and a Descriptive Certificate. The 2009 award will be
presented at the Banquet of the 28th International Conference on
Thermoelectrics and the 7th European Conference on Thermoelectrics
(ICT & ECT 2009), July 26 – 30, in Freiburg, Germany.

In addition, the recipient of the ITS Young Investigator Award will
be given an invited talk at the ICT & ECT 2009 in order to highlight
the research leading to the award.

*Eligibility:*
The candidates are expected to hold a Ph.D. Degree and be actively
engaged in theoretical, experimental, synthesis or device research in
the field of thermoelectrics. The candidates must be in a tenure track
faculty position or employed in a stable position in industry, a
government lab or scientific institute (e.g. The Max Planck
Institute). It is expected that they should have been in this position
at least two years. However, contributions and productivity for the
full five years will be considered. Postdoctoral researchers or
temporary industrial positions are not eligible. The candidates must
be within 5 years of receiving their Ph.D. as of June 1st of the year
of the nomination.

The ITS Young Investigator Award for Excellence in Research in
Thermoelectrics is intended for truly exceptional contributions to the
field for a five-year period following the nominee’s Ph.D. The ITS
Young Investigator Award is intended to be an annual award. However,
in the event of the lack of applications that the ITS Board or Award
Selection Committee views as meeting the expectations for this award,
then no award will be given that year.

*Criteria for selection:*
An Award Selection Panel who will consider the afore mentioned
eligibility criteria will choose the winner from among the applicants:

A nomination letter is required. A full resume of the candidate and
highlighting the contributions justifying the nomination is also
required. Three letters of reference are required in addition to the
nomination letter. None of the letters should exceed two pages.

The work will not be judged as part of their Ph.D. thesis but work
that occurred after their Ph.D. research. The work may be a
continuation of their Ph.D., but significant new contributions and
findings will be required. The selection committee will be considering
only original work and contributions.

Journal Articles with publication dates, acceptance dates or
submission dates within the 60 months preceding the June 1st cutoff
date. Therefore for the 2009 award the period of consideration is May
31st, 2004 through June 1st, 2009.

Presentations at local, national and international meetings as well
as invited seminars and colloquia in the same time period will be
considered.

Other awards or recognition will also be considered.

*Selection Panel:*
The Selection Panel will consist of the previous ITS conference chair
(i.e. ICT08 Chairman for the 2009 Award) or his designee and he/she
will serve as the Panel Chair. The Panel Deputy Chair will be
appointed by the ITS President. The Panel Chair with the help of the
Deputy Chair will nominate up to but not exceeding four other non-ITS
Board members representing various geographical regions. The panel
selection is accomplished through action of the ITS Board via whatever
means are most convenient, most likely via email exchange.

*Application:*
Should be sent to the current ITS President:

Call For Proposals To Host ICT2011, the 30th annual International
Conference on Thermoelectrics

The following is an announcement from the President of the
International Thermoelectric Society.

Dear Prospective Conference Organizer,

The International Thermoelectric Society (ITS) is looking for
organizations interested in hosting its 30th annual *International
Conference on Thermoelectrics *(ICT) in the year 2011.

The ICT has been the most important annual meeting for scientists,
engineers and industry in the field of thermoelectric research and
development for application to power generation, thermal management
and sensing equipment. Thanks to a renewal in the field of
thermoelectrics, and a string of well-organized conferences, interest
in this conference has been steady in the last few years with
attendance between 200 and 300 “thermoelectricians".

ITS typically holds a three year rotation for conference sites
between Europe, Asia and the Americas, where most of the activities in
thermoelectrics are located. In 2011, the ICT is scheduled to return
to the Americas, where it was last held in 2008 in Corvallis, Oregon.
Thus, ITS's preference is for candidate organizations, especially
universities and national laboratories, located in the Americas to
host ICT2011. However, that does not preclude ITS from entertaining
strong proposals from other parts of the world and other types of
organizations.

Interested parties should first send, preferably by e-mail, a brief
notice of intent to propose to the ITS President. Upon receipt of the
notice, the ITS president will provide details relative to anticipated
conference organizers responsibilities, guidelines and other ITS
expectations. Full proposals should be sent, as early as possible but
no later than June 1st 2009, preferably by e-mail to the ITS
President, to the ITS treasurer, and to the ITS Secretary.

Proposals should include relevant details including host
organization, location, preliminary dates, Conference Chairperson,
projected sponsors and prospects for financial support, and
accessibility; briefly state the expected advantages to the ITS for
awarding the conference organization to you; describe accommodation
facilities, travel connections, plans for accompanying persons, the
possibility of holding short courses, evening events; last but not
least, the expected registration costs for regular participants,
students and accompanying persons.

The ITS Board plans on reviewing the proposals at the annual ITS
Board Meeting immediately prior to ICT2009
[1] and award organization of the conference at the 2009 ICT in
Freiburg, Germany
[1]. You may be invited to give a brief presentation on your
proposal to the ITS Board at the conference in Freiburg.

On behalf of the International Thermoelectric Society, I am looking
forward to your proposals.

Best regards,

Thierry Caillat

**Postdoc position for thermoelectric oxides processing and
characterization
**

The functional ceramics group at CRISMAT Laboratory (France) seeks
qualified applicants for a post-doc position. The research project
will be working on thermoelectric materials, which can convert heat
into electricity or vice versa. Series of oxides will be synthesized
and selected. Structural/microstructural modifications will be applied
to optimize the thermoelectric performance. The relationship between
properties and structures as well as doping levels will be examined.

Successful candidates shall have a PhD in the field of material
ceramic, solid state chemistry/physics, or related disciplines.
Applicants should also have profound knowledge in ceramics processing
and characterization, e.g. XRD, SEM, thermal analysis, transport
properties measurements. Experience with Seebeck and/or thermal
conductivity measurements will be beneficial for this project. The
project will be carried out in close collaboration with industry. Good
communication skills in English, both written and spoken, are
desirable.

The position is available now. For more information and also
applications, please contact Dr Emmanuel Guilmeau, email
