ZTnews is an aperiodic publication on thermoelectrics.
Lately more aperiodic than usual, if that's possible

+- Thermionic Revolution: Hope At Last

The audacity of thermionic hope?

A reader called to my attention the 'The Thermionic Revolution' website which includes what sounds like an endorsement from friend and esteemed authority Gerry Mahan as well as the following claims:

"A simple way has been found that promises to make cheap abundant electricity from the heat in air

  • oil will become worthless
  • the price of electricity will tumble
  • cars will run on heat from the air
  • ships will run on heat from sea water"

And that's just the front page.  Since I first looked at the website, some of the internal links have turned to "coming soon", but you get the idea.

I'm happy to report that Mahan, described on the website as a "visiting Professor at Penn State University", actually has a permanent position there and is not associated with the 'The Thermionic Revolution' folks.

You'd be surprised how often this sort of claim comes up: huge claims but no meat.  Well, perhaps you're not surprised either.  I suppose the idea is to attract attention.  Hmm.  What does that make me?

Preliminary TE measurements on new quaternary iron-based superconductors

A few weeks ago I noted the recent discovery of some new quaternary iron-based superconductors which might be of interest for thermoelectrics.  David Bérardan tells me his group had already initiated studies and have a paper currently in the "early view" section of physica status solidi (RRL):

Loreynne Pinsard-Gaudart, D. B. J. B. N. D. Large Seebeck coefficients in iron-oxypnictides: a new route towards n-type thermoelectric materials. physica status solidi (RRL) - Rapid Research Letters 9999, NA (2008).

No thermal conductivity or ZT data yet, but the authors are enthusiastic that good ZT values can be obtained around liquid nitrogen temperatures.

Thermoelectric generator for automotive application

The recent development of new thermoelectric materials and the increasing environmental constraints have promote the search for solution of conversion of heat into electrical energy using the thermoelectric way.

The present project is devoted to the development of thermoelectric generators for automotive applications. With 70% of its energy lost in the form of heat, a vehicle is today an important target for the thermoelectric generation.
Located in Normandy (France) the CRISMAT laboratory (Caen) is specialized in the search for new materials including thermoelectric materials. With the collaboration of the CNRT (Caen), it actually develops thermoelectric generators for intermediate and high temperature applications.
A three year engineer position is proposed, in order to develop thermoelectric generators for automotive applications.

The engineer in charged of this project will have to design, build and test the thermoelectric modules. He will be involved in the overall developpement of the generator including the collaboration with industrials of the automotive area, equipment suppliers and end-users.

Tasks:
• Design of thermoelectric modules.
• Assembly and test.
• Management of the constraints of assembly. (thermomechanical and electrical).

Skills:
Material Engineer. Knowledges of the problems of thermics and mechanics is desirable.

Localization: CRISMAT ENSICAEN
Position: Ingenieur de recherche (CNRS).
