+- New Start-Up GMZ Brings 'Fine Grain' TE To Market
http://www.its.org/node/5416
As early as 1978 Bhandari and Rowe [Bhandari, 1978] suggested improving
thermoelectrics by reducing the grain size. Back then 'fine grain'
meant maybe micron sized or slightly smaller. But today people are
learning to make nano-scale grain structures.
Starting thursday March 20, 2008 reports abound that GMZ Energy, Inc.
(no website yet, AFAIK), a startup with an undisclosed amount of seed
funding from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers [1], is gearing up to make
up to 7 tons/year of nano-scale Bi2Te3-type thermoelectric material with
a reported 40% increase in ZT.
The process, said to be based on technology developed at MIT and Boston
College, involves grinding a conventional Bi2Te3-type material to 20
nanometer particle size and pressing them back together again. Details
have just been published in Science Express [Poudel, 2008],
http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/abstract/1156446 [2].
According to one source they "predict that their technique will be
integrated into commercial manufacturing in several months".
A Google search on "GMZ Energy thermoelectric" will turn up many links,

+- Kansas Blocks New Coal Plants
http://www.its.org/node/5415
A Kansas state regulator denied permits to build two new coal-fired
thermoelectric power plants ('thermoelectric' because they convert heat
to electricity, but this type of plant does not involve Seebeck or
Peltier devices) based on their carbon emmisions. The Kansas
legislature passed a bill allowing the plants to go forward, then late
last week the Kansas Governor vetoed the bill and halting the project.
For now, at least. Here's a link with the full story:
http://www.kansascity.com/679/story/541098.html [1]
It is not clear if the legislature can override the veto, but they are
expected to try.
Banning new fossil fuel power plants is an important step. But let's
put this in a little perspective. By some estimates we need to
eliminate 80%, or even more, of the world's fossil fuel plants just to
have a chance of keeping climate change from getting out of hand. If
we replace a 1 gigawatt fossil-fuel power plant every day it will take
nearly three decades to get there. In the mean time, China alone is
adding a new coal plant every 3-4 days.
Daunting.
