Symposium: Thermoelectric Materials: Science, Technology and Applications

Scope:

This symposium attempts to bring the multidisciplinary researchers on
one platform to share the research in thermoelectric materials and
thermoelectrics. The symposium will have a strong emphasis on emerging
areas exploring new classes of materials with potentially higher
thermoelectric figure of merit. In particular, novel synthesis
approaches of bulk materials, thin films, superlattices, nanostructured
materials will be highlighted, as well as new spectroscopy and in situ
characterization and modeling of materials and thermoelectric responses
at the nanoscale. Theoretical studies of transport properties, crystal
chemistry of materials, thermodynamic analysis and energy transferring
processes will be included. The symposium will also cover recent
advances in metrology, technology and application of thermoelectric
materials. Work on thermoelectric device innovations will be highlighted
that would lead to the next generation thermoelectric refrigeration and
power generation applications.

Organizer: Qiang Li, Brookhaven National Laboratory;
Co-organizers: W. Wong-Ng, National Institute of Standards and
Technology;
T.M. Tritt, Clemson University; G.S.
Nolas, University of South Florida

HIGH TEMPERATURE MATERIALS, PROCESSES & DIAGNOSTICS

July 20-25, 2008
Colby College
Waterville, ME

Chair: Elizabeth J. Opila
Vice Chair: Marius Stan

Application Deadline: Applications for this meeting must be submitted by
June 29, 2008.

Please apply early, as some conferences become oversubscribed (full)
before this deadline. If the conference is oversubscribed, it will be
stated here. You will still be able to submit your application. However,
it will only be considered by the Conference Chair if there are
cancellations, making more seats available.

High temperature phenomena are important during the fabrication,
characterization and implementation of a variety of advanced materials.
The program for the 2008 meeting will concentrate on advanced materials
for energy applications, power and propulsion. Planned sessions include
thermoelectric materials, solid oxide fuel cells, nuclear materials,
ultrahigh temperature ceramics, interfacial phenomena, and material
property determination. Many of the presentations will emphasize the
effects of material structure on properties. In addition, thermodynamic
and kinetic considerations for material behaviour will also be
emphasized. Both experimental and computational research will be presented.

Financial support is available for students and other young researchers.
This support will be contingent on the presentation of a poster during
one of the poster sessions. Other attendees are also encouraged to
present posters on their work.

+- ICT2007 Proceedings Available for Orders
http://www.its.org/node/5386

I have had word from Prof. H. W. Lee, chairmain of ICT2007 held last
summer on Jeju Island, Korea, that the Proceedings of ICT2007 would be
published 'next week'. That was 5-6 weeks ago. I can not at present
confirm if it has actually been printed or mailed.

For those who (like me) missed ICT2007, we now have a webpage where you
may order a copy for US$120. Payment must be made by wire transfer, and
be sure in include any fees your bank may take out of the amount so that
the ICT2007 organizers don't come up short.

Here is the website to order ICT2007: http://ict2007.its.org/ [1]

Unfortunately, the original conference website has been taken down
before I had a chance to 'clone' a copy.

+- Consultancy Role
Posted By tlewinsohn [at] tiscali [dot] co [dot] uk

http://www.its.org/node/5379

A candidate with a strong knowledge of thermoelectrics and a working
knowledge of thermionics is required for a short-term and part-time
consultancy role which could grow into a long-term commitment.

The company in question has developed a technology based on a
combination of solid-state thermoelectric and thermionic principles, and
requires someone who is able to get up to speed with the technology in a
short space of time, and then able to clearly explain it to other
scientists, engineers, and laypeople, in meetings and in writing.

Ideally, the candidate would be based in the UK, but applications from
Europe and North America will also be considered.

Interested parties should send their CV to tlewinsohn [at] tiscali [dot] co [dot] uk
