+- Call for Proposals to Host ICT2009: Due May 11, 2007
http://www.zts.com/ict2009_cfp

The following is an announcement from the President of the International
Thermoelectric Society. Please direct your responses to:

Prof. Ctirad Uher, ITS President <cuher [at] umich [dot] edu>,
Dr. Harald Böttner, ITS Treasurer <Harald.Boettner [at] ipm [dot] fraunhofer [dot] de>
and
Prof. Michael Rowe, ITS Secretary <rowedm1 [at] Cardiff [dot] ac [dot] uk> [1]

Dear prospective Conference Organizer,

The International Thermoelectric Society (ITS) is looking for
organizations interested in hosting its 29th annual International
Conference on Thermoelectrics (ICT) in the year 2009.

The ICT has been the most important annual meeting for scientists,
engineers and industry in the field of thermoelectric research and
development for application to power generation, thermal management and
sensing equipment. Thanks to a renewal in the field of thermoelectrics,
and a string of well organized conferences, interest in this conference
increased in the last few years with attendance between 200 and 300
“thermoelectricians" (281 attended ICT2006 in Vienna, Austria and 251
attended ICT2005 in Clemson, SC USA).

ITS is now holding a three year rotation for conference sites between
Europe, Asia and the Americas, where most of the activities in
thermoelectrics are located. In 2008, the ICT is scheduled to return to
Europe, where it was last held in 2006 in Vienna, Austria. Thus, ITS's
preference is for candidate organizations, especially universities and
national laboratories, located in Europe to host ICT2009. However, that
does not preclude ITS from entertaining strong proposals from other
parts of the world and other types of organizations.

The ITS has been offering some small level of financial support to
conference organizing committees and since 1996 has teamed with IEEE for
publishing the Conference Proceedings.

If you would like to submit your application for hosting the ICT2009
conference, please write me a letter stating your interest and provide
some relevant details as to host organization, location, preliminary
date, Conference Chairperson, projected sponsors and prospects for
financial support, and accessibility.

Also briefly state the expected advantages to the ITS by awarding the
conference organization to you, and describe key associated activities
such as invited speakers, the possibility of holding short courses,
evening events, etc.

Prospective organizers are encouraged to look at the draft "ICT
Conference Organizer's Condensed To-Do List" at

http://www.its.org/ict_organizers_todo [2]

which may be of help in preparing your proposal.

We plan on reviewing the proposals at the annual ITS Board Meeting
immeadiately prior to ICT2007 on Sunday June 3, 2007 and award
organization of the conference at the 2007 ICT in Jeju Island, South
Korea. You may be invited to give a brief presentation on your proposal
to the ITS Board.

On behalf of the International Thermoelectric Society, I am looking forward
receiving detailed letters of intent from you by the May 11, 2007 deadline.

Best regards,

Ctirad Uher

+- Colorado Students Develop TEG-Stove for Developing Nations
http://www.zts.com/node/5034

The Denver Post reported on Jan. 30, 2007 [1] (I just saw the story) a
thermoelectric generator coupled with a stove for use in developing
countries. Six engineering and business students at Colorado State
University developed the prototype as part of a MBA program and plan to
form a for-profit business.

Part of their business plan involves Sewa Bank [2], an Indian bank that
provides banking services to poor, illiterate, self-employed women. Sewa
Bank [3], which pioneered the idea of 'microloans', will reportedly
provide financing for those who buy the stoves.

The TEG-stove burns wood and can provide enough electricity for lights,
a radio or a small television in areas where there is no electricity.

+- Nominations are open for 2007 ITS Board Elections
http://www.zts.com/node/4948

Up to five International Thermoelectric Society (ITS) Board Director
positions will be opened for election at the 26th International
Conference on Thermoelectrics [1], to be held in Jeju, Korea, June 3-7,
2007. The ITS Nomination and Election Committee invites you to nominate
your candidate(s) by clicking here [2].

[Webmaster's note: ITS Members must login before submitting a
nomination. Use your email address or userid (if you have one) to
login. Please contact the webmaster [2] if you have trouble.]

The Committee will make every effort to attract candidates from a
variety of geographic, technical fields, and institutions, to best serve
the Mission of the International Thermoelectric Society. The list of
current Board Directors can be found here [3].

Board Directors are elected for a three-year term and are expected to
play an active role in the international Thermoelectric Society business
and promotion. The major goals (objectives) of the Society, as stated in
the ITS Constitution [4], are to:

PROMOTE the advancement of the thermoelectric industry, science and
engineering;
PROMOTE collection and exchange of information and education which
will benefit the thermoelectric community;
PROMOTE systemization of measurements to and in comparison of
materials and devices;
PROMOTE awareness of the larger community to thermoelectric issues
and solicit wider involvement;
PROMOTE a forum of exchange of information and achievements.
-Newsletters;
PROMOTE a mechanism for coordinating and promoting conferences.

Nominations will be accepted until April 27, 2007. Short biographies and
information of the Nominees will be posted on the ITS web site at
(http://www.its.org [5]) shortly after.

The election of the new Board Director will be organized at the
Conference in Jeju and further details (including the final number of
positions opened) will be announced at the beginning of the conference
by the ITS President and the ITS Nomination and Election Committee.

We have learned Prof. Dave Johnson has been awarded the The Rosaria P.
Haugland Endowed Chair in Pure and Applied Chemistry at the University
of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon.

Please join me in congratulating Prof. Johnson.

Prof. Johnson is the newest ITS Board member and Chairman for ICT2008,

+- SCT-93 Short Course on Thermoelectrics Online
http://www.its.org/sct93

The 1993 Short Course on Thermoelectrics, SCT-93, was organized by Prof.
K. I. Uemura on November 8, 1993 in Yokohama, Japan as part of the 1993
International Conference on Thermoelectrics.

These Lectures provide a snapshot of thermoelectric state-of-the-art
circa 1993, when modern-era concepts such as "quantum wells" and
"quantum wires" were just being introduced. Much of the material
remains relevant and of interest today.

Until now the Lectures from SCT-93 have been available only to those who
attended the course in 1993. Click on the link above for scanned PDF
files of the Lectures.

The tragic events earlier this week on the normally idyllic campus of
Virginia Tech [1] (aka Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State
University) in Blacksburg, Virginia remind us once again that life is
brief, fragile and precious.
