+- ICT2007 Abstract Deadline Extended to March 24, 2007
http://www.ict2007.net

OK, THIS is the last reminder: Abstracts are really due for ICT2007.
See the conference website for details.

It has been brought to my attention that emails sent to the conference
organizer at hwlee [at] keri [dot] re [dot] kr are bouncing at the keri.re.kr mail server
with a "Blocked for spam". I tested this today, and it is true. I've
not had a chance to reach the ICT2007 organizers by other means yet, but
hopefully this glitch will be repaired soon.

Spam is killing email

+- Dresselhaus Wins 2007 "Women in Science" Award
http://www.zts.com/node/4939

MIT Professor Millie Dresselhaus has been awarded the 2007
L'Oréal-UNESCO Award for Women in Science

"For her research on solid state materials, including
conceptualizing the creation of carbon nanotubes."

The award ceremony was held Feb. 22, 2007 in Paris and each winner
received individual awards of $100,000.

The L'Oreal website has an excellent page on their Women in Science [1]
award program, including an excellent profile of Millie. The MIT
website [2]also reports this Award, and both sites include some nice
photos and videos of Millie. Neither site mentions her well known
contributions to thermoelectrics, including her papers on quantum wells
[1] and quantum wires [2] for thermoelectric applications. These two
papers must be among the most cited thermoelectric papers of all time,
but acknowledging her contributions to thermoelectrics may have to wait
for some future award.

Her advice for young women scientists:

"A scientific career is extremely rewarding, and if I had to do it
all over again I would follow the same course. The rewards are different
at every stage. I still have the same fascination for science that I
had when I was young."

+- Nominations now open for 2007 ITS Board Elections
http://www.zts.com/node/4948

Up to five International Thermoelectric Society (ITS) Board Director
positions will be opened for election at the 26th International
Conference on Thermoelectrics [1], to be held in Jeju, Korea, June 3-7,
2007. The ITS Nomination and Election Committee invites you to nominate
your candidate(s) by clicking here [2].

[Webmaster's note: ITS Members must login before submitting a
nomination. Use your email address or userid (if you have one) to
login. Please contact the webmaster [2] if you have trouble.]

The Committee will make every effort to attract candidates from a
variety of geographic, technical fields, and institutions, to best serve
the Mission of the International Thermoelectric Society. The list of
current Board Directors can be found here [3].

Board Directors are elected for a three-year term and are expected to
play an active role in the international Thermoelectric Society business
and promotion. The major goals (objectives) of the Society, as stated in
the ITS Constitution [4], are to:

PROMOTE the advancement of the thermoelectric industry, science and
engineering;
PROMOTE collection and exchange of information and education which
will benefit the thermoelectric community;
PROMOTE systemization of measurements to and in comparison of
materials and devices;
PROMOTE awareness of the larger community to thermoelectric issues
and solicit wider involvement;
PROMOTE a forum of exchange of information and achievements.
-Newsletters;
PROMOTE a mechanism for coordinating and promoting conferences.

Nominations will be accepted until April 27, 2007. Short biographies and
information of the Nominees will be posted on the ITS web site at
(http://www.its.org [5]) shortly after.

The election of the new Board Director will be organized at the
Conference in Jeju and further details (including the final number of
positions opened) will be announced at the beginning of the conference
by the ITS President and the ITS Nomination and Election Committee.

+- Solar (Thermoelectric) Energy Conversion
http://www.zts.com/node/4920

The March 2007 issue of Physics Today (1) has an article on "Solar
Energy Conversion" by George Crabtree of Argonne and Nathan Lewis of
CalTech [1] (free: HTML [2], PDF [3]). Abundant, versitle and clean,
solar electricity contributes a miniscule 0.015% of the world's total
electricity production, mostly because solar energy remains too
expensive. Wouldn't it be great if we could figure otu a way (or ways)
to make soler energy more available and less expensive? Crabtree and
Lewis discuss a range of options to develop solar energy based largely
on ideas in a US Department of Energy workshop report.

One scheme would concentrate solar radiation to generate high
temperatures which can then be converted to electricity using
thermoelectric technology. (Well, strictly speaking the heat is
converted to electricity, not the temperatures, but I digress). And, of
course, this will require thermoelectric materials and devices much more
effiicient and less expesnsive than available today.

A recommended read for anyone interested in thermoelectrics.
