Thermoelectricity of the National Academy of Sciences, Ukraine since

+- ENECO Raises US$20M from Proterra

ENECO, the Salt Lake City based R&D company developing what they
describe as a 'Thermal Diode' for energy conversion and which once held
patent rights to the Pons & Fleischmann cold fusion 'discovery', has
reportedly (Green Buisness News) [1] landed US$20M from Proterra Energy
[2] in a new partnership valued at US$2B (that's 109) over the next
seven years. ENECO gets a 10% cut.

The Green Buisness News piece also reports ENECO as describing their
energy conversion technology as 'still in the "pre-manufacturing" stage
and that the company is still working on resolving certain "packaging
issues"'.

After ENECO's cut, that still works out to a 90% annualized return on
investment (assuming that US$2B number is net, after expenses).

+- Ulyssses at Sun's South Pole

NASA reports the Ulysses spacecraft, [1] a joint NASA-ESA venture,
recently passed beneath the south pole of the sun on it's way up to the
sun's north pole. This is the third such pole-to-pole passage in the
spacecraft's 17 year history.

Ulysses is powered by an RTG [2] built by Lockheed-Martin and provided
to the mission by the US Department of Energy. The RTG uses a Pu238
heat source and SiGe (silicon-germanium) thermocouples operating at
about Th=1000 oC and Tc=300 oC.

Gotta love those RTGs.

Postdoctoral Position Available

Thermoelectric Materials Synthesis and Characterization:

The applicant will assist in the research of high performance
thermoelectric materials, which involves material synthesis, structural
& chemical characterization, and transport property measurements.
Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics
or similar discipline. Experience with synthesis and characterization of
materials is a strong advantage. An understanding of transport
properties including thermal conductivity, thermopower, and electrical
conductivity in semiconductors, semi-metals, and composite materials is
desired. The appointment is initially for a one-year period and may be
renewed in one-year increments for a maximum of three additional years.
